Lymm - Stopped for provisions - 2 weeks to early for the supermarket?

Worsley to Dutton Wharf Bridge (Gear cable comes loose.)

Started after a early breakfast today. Full day with no locks! there are not many times you can do that. We spend most of the day, doing the Bridgewater canal, broad and wide and not a lock insight, allowing the miles to tumble. Can do a steady 4 miles an hour today.

The first few miles after Worsley still seems slightly depressing, it is more green, but the steel sides of the canal still gives an all pervading feeling of brutalism. After the lighthouse and the swing bridge over Manchester ship canal, we are on to a straight few miles into Manchester. Towards the end you hit the big shopping centre, with its own little mooring and street light!

We turn sharp right at the junction and head off towards Lymm. The view quickly gets better now as you head away from Manchester. This section contains many areas of moored boats, so you have to throttle back and take it steady.

At Lymm we moor for a while to get bread and one or two essentials and have lunch and then we press on.

We reach the end of the Bridgewater and the start of the Trent and Mersey canal at the entrance to the Preston Brook Tunnel, our time is good to day, so we press on.

Just after the tunnel there is a stop lock, it changes the water level by only a few inches. After Manchester City centre, we had the feeling there were more boats on the move than we had seen for most of the trip, so at the stop lock we had our first queue. On leaving the stop lock, we noticed we had a slight problem with controlling the speed of the boat, we had no reverse, as time was getting on we decide to keep going so we could moor for the night and look at the problem in the morning when the engine had cooled down.

We moored up at about 20:00 and had a good tea.
