Wycoller Country Park
This in fact now in Lancashire, but we won't say anything about that? Robert's visit with Richard on the 12th August 2009.
Wycoller - Forgotten village WAS.
This was once a deserted village that has been brought back to life. Hidden in the dead-end valley of Trawden Forest some 3 miles east of Colne. the village was once the home of handloom weavers, but with the coming of the industrial revolution, people moved to the growing text tile towns of Lancashire.
The abandoned cottages started to crumble, including the manor house. Oliver Goldsmith's poem describing the effect of Industrial revolution on an idyllic village he calls Auburn is said to be based on Wycoller. It is reported that Charlotte Bronte, living in Haworth walked here with her sisters and brother, (some 5 miles), and were affected by the place and based 'Ferndean Manor' in her novel 'Jane Eyer' on Wycoller Hall.
The Atom.
The first few pictures are of the 'Panopticon' called 'The Aton' at Wycoller Country park. It is the first of a sequence of sculptures to be placed across the landscape in Lancashire. It is at the car park on the Haworth Road, and it is worth parking here to look at it and see the landscape through it, before walking down in to the valley to look at the village of Wycollller, (they have nice coffee once you get there.)
