A small town that has retained much of its bygone charm. It gained its charter from Henry III in 1249 and still retains its weekly market (Tuesdays). In the days of the stagecoach this was a busy stopping place, but it was not till the days of steam that Settle was put on the map. The line from Skipton to Carlisle runs through a very scenic root, the trains passing over 21 viaducts and through some 14 tunnels and not counting the numerous bridges along the way.
