The village of Askrigg

In the Doomsday book it is called 'Ascric', a centre for trading for many centuries, but its market charter was only given in 1587. When Hawes market, (a village further up the dales) came more important, it lapsed in 19th Century.

The village is now know for its connection with 'All creatures great and small' a long running TV series, as the village 'Darrowby'. The present hotel 'Kings Arms' (18th Century building) was often seen as the 'The Drovers Arms' while 'Cringley House'  became 'Skeldale house', the home of the vets.

Near here at Carr End, Dr John Fothergill, a local Quaker, was born in 1712. A medical practitioner, who wrote the first clear account of diphtheria, Fothergill was also a botanist collecting plants from around the world.

Coming of the moors leads you directly in to Askrigg

We stopped here for a coffee break and spend a penny. Even though there was not many people about, the places was crowded with cars. This seems to be the right time of year to see these touristy places.
